Basics on TCP/IP and Ethernet

The course deals with basic concepts and principles of modern internet network protocols. Main mechanisms, services and applications as well as tools for monitoring and analysis of protocols in IP networks are presented. This course serves as a base course for many other courses in the field of network technologies.

  • Introduction to OSI and TCP/IP protocol stacks
  • Ethernet technology: architecture and concepts
  • Mechanisms: VLAN, STP, MSTP, RSTP
  • IP protocol: conceptual outline, addressing scheme (CIDR, VLSM)
  • ICMP, TCP and UDP
  • Mechanisms: DHCP, NAT, PAT
  • Applications, services and tools: telnet, HTTP, DNS, FTP, TFTP, SMTP, POP, IMAP, SNMP, SMB, ping, nslookup, traceroute
  • Routing principles
  • IP parameter configuration
  • Use of ping, traceroute, nslookup tools
